Almost killed my glider :( 1 out of 5 stars

Reviewed on: Jul 2 2012 3:09PM

I purchased Jovie from a pet store, not knowing a lot about sugar gliders at the time. She was only 34 grams (I believe that is the correct measurement unit to use...) she still had a slicked tail but I was told she was old enough so I believed it. She had diarrhea a couple of days later so I took her in to this vet clinic. They took her into the other room and would not let me see them handle her. I was told to ask about a tent test for dehydration, and they assured me she was well hydrated and the fecal was negative. They gave her two forms of medication and sent me on my way. When I got her home she started vomiting and having diarrhea simultaneously. I called and they told me to bring her back in immediately, which of course did. When I got there is different vet came in and performed a tent test in front of me showing me she was clearly dehydrated and told me on top of the $140 they had already charged me it would be $80 to subq fluids and I only had moments to decide on the extra charge or she would die. After talking it over with some knowledgeable people it turns out she had diarrhea from being too young and I had changed her diet too quickly from pellets to bml and various fruits. She should have never been given the meds in the first place. They were not kind during the whole experience until the very end. Did not apologize, and did not refund me the money I spent on her. Needless to say I was very disappointed. That being said the Westgate Pet and Bird hospital is actually NOT related to this clinic and are very knowledgeable and good at what they do. I mention this because although they appear to be affiliated, I was told by the staff there that they are not. They preformed surgery on Jovie at 34 grams for 2 impacted teeth just a few days after this and did a fabulous job all the way around. I say this because I do not want the Westgate center to have a bad name due to what the research center has done. Fast forward many months later I had a friend who rescued a self mutilator. He wanted to take him in for a neuter and despite my warnings took him to this hospital. Max pulled his stitches twice so their reaction was to tape him, yes tape, him up into a full body cast for 24 days... He is in the process of getting it off as I type this... We shall see how that goes...

2 Vet Offices

Reviewed on: May 28 2009 6:16PM

I have had my gliders to the North and South Office and both are wonderful. I did a rescue up until 2 years ago and would have as many as nine gliders at a time. I lived in North Austin and used their office then I moved to South Austin 3 years ago and now use their office. They are very caring and I have been using them since 2002.

I was extremely happy with the care my glider received at this hospital. The vet called me immediately after surgery to tell me everything went well. I picked up my glider the same day and he has done beautifully since. I couldn't be happier with the care or the staff that I came into contact with.

Anouther Great Vet in Austin

Reviewed on: Oct 20 2003 12:00AM

Yay! I just got back from this vet and it was great. They were all super nice to me and saw Jayden (my hurt little glider who had a cut hand). They showed me to a room and sat me down with in 5 min the vet herself came in sat down with me and told me whats wrong, then an adtenedent showed me how to admistor some drugs to my little guy and I was out the door in 30 min. But I never felt rushed at all, this place was great and was fairly cheap cost me 35 bucks for the chekup and some drugs. I highly recommand this place.
